Hacia 1656 el tratadista Lázaro Díaz del Valle se refirió a Luis Tristán (c. 1585- 1624) como «excelente pintor de historias». Nacido en Toledo y formado bajo la influencia del Greco, con el que coincidió en su obrador entre 1603 y 1606, Tristán desarrolló una pintura fundamentalmente religiosa aunando el estilo de su maestro con las primeras tendencias del naturalismo.
